EPA's Mandate
The department of Intersectoral Coordination plays a key role in raising environmental awareness that involves the knowledge of positive attitude towards the environment. Intersectoral Coordination Department is responsible to coordinate EPA linkages and cooperates with line ministries, agencies and other organizations, local as well as international. The Department also designs and develops public information approaches and packages in collaboration with the legal unit.
The goal is to set an awareness platform for Liberians to understand the importance of the environment and what should be the role of everyone in dealing with environmental issues across the country as a way of preparing them to positively contribute to the protection of our environment. The general objective is ensured availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all: This will be attained through the following specific objectives;
1. Keep the community clean and safe at all times
2. Equip community through trainings, establishment of environmental health and sanitation club, health promotion, economic empowerment
3. Advocate among technical and financial Partners and policy makers regarding the importance of sustaining healthy community.
4. Establish positive, proactive domestic innovations/initiatives to enable effective “whole of community” effort and compliance.
5. Identify best practices from other communities and share those best practices Key Achievements
The Department of Intersectoral Coordination has two units each of which is headed by an assistant manager who reports to the Manager of the department. The two units are:
Environmental Education, Training and Outreach Unit – is responsible for conducting outreach and environmental education to the general populace. It carries out a small group discussion with schools and communities.
Environmental Unit – main function is to establish environmental desks in line ministries and agencies as well as CSOs and CBOs. It helps strengthen the capacities of those desks officers to tackle environmental issues in their institutions. Mostly carried out training in small group of key institutions.
• The Department of Intersectoral Coordination is also responsible to:
• Promote public awareness
• Manage the national network of environmental information
• Coordinate activities of environment units established in the various line ministries and agencies
• Supervise the production, distribution and marketing of the agency’s environmental publication
• Organization and implementation of special environmental events
• Organize and coordinate training programmes, including workshop
• Perform other tasks that may be necessary to the department and as well as the general good of the EPA
