About EPA

EPA's Mandate

The EPA shall be the principal authority for the management of the environment and shall co-ordinate, monitor, supervise and consult with relevant stakeholders on all activities in the protection of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources in Liberia.

All Departments at the Agency

Executive
The executive department is header by the Executive Director who is the Chief Executive Officer of the environmental protection agency. The Executive Director is assisted by the Deputy Executive Director and heads of departments.
Administration
The Department of Administration is dedicated to delivering efficient, effective, and economical support services that enable the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia to fulfill its mandate.
Finance
The Department of Finance is headed by a Comptroller, assisted by Assistant Comptroller and three assisting managers. The department is responsible to support the Administration of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in making financial decision and developing fiscal policy to ensure sound financial management system, this department is also responsible for the oversight of all effective / efficient financial and accounting services, responsible to coordinate with all department for revenue generation, collaborate with Administration/HR for the preparation of all payrolls and payments.
Compliance and Enforcement (C&E)
The Compliance & Enforcement department ensures compliance to environmental laws standards and regulations, and sustainable natural resources management.
Intersectoral
The goal is to set an awareness platform for Liberians to understand the importance of the environment and what should be the role of everyone in dealing with environmental issues across the country as a way of preparing them to positively contribute to the protection of our environment.
Planning and Policy
This is the Agency’s strategic arm for planning, reporting and monitoring performances of the AWP including other planned activities.
Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)
Liberia is currently Party to at least 10 multilateral environmental agreements which include: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES);United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety ; Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance ; UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); The Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change ; The Convention on Migratory Species (CMS); UN Convention to Combat Desertification/Land Degradation (UNCCD); The Basel Convention Prohibiting the Movement of Hazardous Chemicals ;The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) ; and The Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances.
Environmental Research & Radiation Safety (ERRS)
The goal of the Department is to obtain empirical analytical data that helps inform policy formulation to abate future environmental disasters, reduce pollution risks, and mitigate impacts associated with project activities on the environment and bio-receptors (humans, plants, and animals).
