PLANNED INVENTORY RELATING TO IONIZING RADIATION SOURCES IN LIBERIA

October 30, 2022

This is to inform the general public that beginning Wednesday, 4 January 2023, the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia will begin a Nationwide Inventory for Ionizing Radiation Sources at Industrial (Industrial Radiography, Industrial Irradiators, Well Logging, Gauges), Medical (Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology), and other (Agriculture, Water Resources, Research, and Education) facilities in Liberia.

The purpose of this exercise is to generate adequate data for the National Radiation Registry of Liberia, bring all users of ionizing radiation sources under regulatory control as well as to fulfill Part IV Section 44 of the Environmental Protection and Management Law (EMPL) of Liberia.

At the end of this exercise, the Agency will develop a registry that accounts for the quantities and locations of all radiation sources in the country so as to ably respond to any future natural or environmental disasters. The exercise will also bring all users of radioactive sources into full compliance as required under Section 44 of the Environmental Protection and Management Law of Liberia.

All concerned facilities are kindly required to grant the monitoring team unhindered access to facilities and provide all requested documents including radioactive sources importation documents, material safety data sheets (MSDS), monitoring reports, waste management plan etc.

The monitoring team will arrive at each facility in an EPA registered vehicle and team members will display their working Identification Cards and conform to the induction protocols as required by the health safety and environmental departments.

Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem and consideration as we strive for environmental sustainability for now and successive generations.
