(Monrovia, Liberia – April 29, 2024) — For the first time in Liberia’s history, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) now has a physical and functional presence in some of the country’s most underserved regions — thanks to the bold and visionary leadership of Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo.
Since taking the helm of the EPA, Dr. Yarkpawolo has led a remarkable decentralization effort, establishing EPA offices in Grand Kru County, Rivercess County, River Gee County, Sinoe County, Grand Cape Mount County, Bentol City in Montserrado County, and even at the National Port Authority. These counties and key locations previously lacked any direct EPA presence.
The EPA recently opened a new, modern headquarters building located in Mamba Point, Monrovia, serving as the central hub for national policy direction, international coordination, and administrative leadership.
“This expansion is about more than just offices. It’s about giving every Liberian, no matter where they live, access to environmental protection, education, and action,” said Dr. Yarkpawolo.
Under his leadership, these offices are now fully operational, engaging local stakeholders, monitoring environmental issues on the ground, and driving national climate and conservation priorities at the county level.
With strong support from partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Dr. Yarkpawolo is delivering on his promise to make the EPA a truly national institution — one that listens, responds, and acts in the interest of the environment and the people.
In the coming days, Dr. Yarkpawolo is expected to travel to River Gee and Grand Kru Counties to officially open the newest EPA offices and meet with local communities and leaders.
This bold move not only decentralizes environmental governance but also strengthens Liberia’s readiness to tackle climate change, protect natural resources, and promote sustainable development.
Under Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, the EPA is no longer centered in Monrovia — it is working for all of Liberia.
