Liberian Delegation Seeks to Adopt ACReSAL’s Development Strategies through South-South Knowledge Exchange.

In a significant move toward strengthening climate resilience and sustainable development, a high-level delegation from Liberia visited Nigeria to explore the transformative strategies of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project. Their visit, facilitated through the South-South Knowledge Exchange under Red+, aimed at adopting best practices in environmental conservation, climate-smart agriculture, and alternative livelihoods for forest dependent communities in Liberia.

Upon their arrival in Nigeria, the delegation spent several days in Abuja engaging with key stakeholders and exchanging insights with various development projects. As part of their field visit, Nasarawa State was selected due to its proximity to Abuja and its remarkable achievements under the ACReSAL project.

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Ammah Moses, National Coordinator of Red+, Alhaji Ibrahim Yakubu emphasized that Nasarawa ACReSAL project was chosen for its outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and climate resilience. “ACReSAL has made a profound impact in promoting climate-smart agriculture and ecosystem restoration, making it a model worth learning from,” he stated.

The visit was driven by the urgent need to combat climate change, rising from deforestation, biodiversity loss and critical issues affecting Liberia. By engaging with ACReSAL, the delegation aimed to explore alternative livelihoods that could be introduced to communities in Liberia that heavily rely on forest resources for survival.

At the ACReSAL State Office in Lafia, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr.Elias Gyobe Napoleon PhD, the State Project Coordinator, who provided an insightful overview of the project’s vision, progress, and impact since its inception and further explain how committed the Government is in the progress of the project. The delegation later proceeded to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, where they met with Permanent Secretary, Alh. Garba Mohammed Rosha.

While addressing the visitors, Alh. Rosha highlighted Nasarawa’s vast natural resources, investment potential, and peaceful environment, which have contributed to the state’s rapid development. He credited His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, for ensuring security and stability, which fosters growth and investment. He assured the delegation of their safety throughout their stay.

The highlight of the visit was a field tour to Marhai Forest Reserve in Wamba local government council , where the delegation was warmly received by the local community in a vibrant display of traditional dance and cultural performances.

Overwhelmed by the hospitality, Mrs. Nora Boweir, the team lead from Liberia, expressed deep appreciation for the warm welcome and enriching experience. “Climate change is a war we must all fight together. Protecting our forests is not an option but a necessity. The knowledge we are gaining here will shape policies back home in Liberia,” she stated passionately.

The delegation witnessed firsthand, the community led initiatives that provide sustainable alternatives to deforestation, such as eco-friendly economic activities that replace charcoal production. Mr. Kefas Daniel, the youth leader of the community, commended the state government for its efforts in empowering local communities by providing a garri processing facility and promoting environmental sustainability. He reaffirmed the commitment of the youth to supporting peace and protecting the green landscape.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Liberian delegation, Hon. Ernest Manseah, a Member of Parliament from Liberia, described Nasarawa as his “second home” and praised the hospitality received. He emphasized the importance of continuous knowledge exchange to tackle global environmental challenges.

The visit marks a new chapter in fostering regional collaboration for climate resilience, reinforcing the shared commitment to greening the environment and safeguarding future generations.
