Harper, Maryland County, Liberia | August 8, 2026 – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, in partnership with the Global Center for Climate Mobility (GCCM), continues with second regional consultation under the Climate Mobility Deep Dive Initiative in Harper, Maryland County.

The 2nd consultation brings together approximately 40 participants from Maryland, River Gee, Grand Kru, and Sinoe Counties to advance discussions on the growing relationship between climate change and human mobility and to contribute to the development of a national Climate Mobility Blueprint for Liberia.

The Harper consultation forms part of a nationwide series of regional engagements designed to generate evidence, strengthen stakeholder participation, and identify practical policy responses to climate-related displacement, migration, and planned relocation. Insights from the consultations will contribute to a High-Level National Policy Dialogue scheduled to take place in Monrovia, bringing together key government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, academia, youth and women’s groups, and the private sector.

In a statement made on behalf of the EPA, Mr. Arthur R.M. Becker, Director of the Department of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), emphasized that climate mobility is increasingly emerging as a significant development and policy issue for Liberia as communities face floods, changing rainfall patterns, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and other climate-related hazards.

He further stressed the importance of integrating climate mobility considerations into national planning processes and ensuring that the perspectives of affected communities remain central to decision-making.

Dr. Andrea Milan, Programme Manager of the Global Center for Climate Mobility, reaffirmed GCCM’s commitment to supporting Liberia in developing evidence-based policies that anticipate climate mobility trends, strengthen climate resilience, and inform long-term planning and adaptation efforts.
